ASTRIA (Sarita Apel) Modern Dance, for Tango see here
Astria was born in Wiesbaden, Germany. She received her Bachelor of Dance in 2011 at Codarts, Rotterdam Dance Academy. In 2009 she was invited by Dansgroep Amsterdam to perform a work by Itzik Galili at the New Island Festival in New York.
Receiving a scholarship of the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds of the Netherlands, she went on to training as a scholarship student at The Ailey School in New York City.
While at The Ailey School, she danced works of choreographers Norbert De La Cruz III, Marcus Willis, Matthew Rushing, Manuel Vignoulle, Sonia Dawkins, Loni Landon, Nia Love and Samantha Speis and performed with The Ailey School and Company in the Ailey Spirit Gala at Lincoln Center.
Subsequently, she was a member of Graham 2 during the 2014/15 season, performing works by Martha Graham and others.
After her season with Graham 2, she joined the CR Dance Company and Dardo Galletto Dance and also became a founding member and principal dancer of ARIM Dance.
In 2019 she also joined the FJK Dance Company.
In New York she also danced for Norbert De La Cruz III, Teresa Fellion Dance (Bodystories), Buglisi Dance Theatre, Creative Time/Nick Cave, Omar Roman de Jesus, Alpha Omega Theatrical Dance Company and the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company.
In 2023 Astria located back to Europe. She has since performed and choreographed for a production of the operette “Maria De Buenos Aires” at the Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern. She is regularly teaching workshops in the Graham Technique.
Astria is currently working on bringing a new musical theatre production to life: GRICEL-A TANGO STORY
